Birds can get in your house in a number of different ways. Often times, they'll do damage inside your home because they're trying to escape. However, sometimes they make their home in your attic, vents, or walls.
Ways that birds get in your home
Any opening on your house is going to be easily accesses by a bird, especially openings that are high off the ground and away from danger.
Common areas birds use are attic vents, roof vents, fascia, and your chimney. Even when a bird is using the outside of the house, like your roof vent for a nest, it can do serious damage to the inside of your house. Birds have waste just like other animals (from feces to other unpleasant bodily fluids) that can make their way into your attic or walls when they nest.
How to keep birds out of your house
The best way to keep birds out of your house is to close up all the holes and vents as best as possible. Calling a handy man or a pest control company can assist with this, as they will make any repairs necessary to fix the problem for you. Little things like keeping the windows closed or putting new screens in can also be a big help.
How to get a bird out of your house
Bird removal when it's in your living area is pretty simple and most homeowners can do it on their own. However, the attic makes for a trickier situation and, more times than not, requires professional help. Make sure to contact your local pest control company to ensure your unwelcome guest is removed and your repairs are done properly.
If you'd like to remove the bird on your own, it's going to depend on where the bird is. If it is in your living area, some of the best ways to do it is to open all your windows and the bird will find its way out. Another route is to use a sheet to catch the bird with and release it outdoors.
If the bird or bird is in your attic and has made a nest, this is a little more tricky. Often times even if you close up the access point, the bird will come back over and over attempting to get into the home to reach its eggs and do damage to the outside of your home.
One of the best things to do is get the animal out first and then close up all of the access points. Once the bird knows that the nest is gone, they will likely move on to find another place.
One way vents are great ways to get the bird out but make sure they do not get back in. Then you can repair the damages the bird caused and clean up the mess, making sure they don't return.
