Raccoons only need a very small opening to access your home. Most raccoons can get inside of your house with as small as a 4 inch gap.
A majority of the time, raccoons enter your home in spots where building materials meet. Examples of these are:
Corners of the fascia
Openings in the soffit
Gaps in your siding and trim
Attic/roof vents
Loose shingles
Holes in your front porch
Raccoons like your house because it is a safe place for them to den. There also might be easy access to trash in the surrounding area, which is a great source of food for them.
Female raccoons with babies will be looking for a space to raise their young and attics are usually where the end up. Male raccoons tend to eat the raccoon babies in an attempt to mate with the female again. This makes the female very protective of her young and a residential home or commercial building is a perfect place for them to hide.
